The inspection and checking of appliances involves a series of visual inspections and electronic tests.
This is the best way of ensuring that your appliances are safe it is also a good way for businesses to ensure that they are meeting their legal obligations to maintain high standards of safety in their buildings.
You as the employer or duty holder are responsible for ensuring that your portable appliance testing has been conducted correctly and at the required intervals.
The IEE have provided a code of practice to guide both clients and test houses and lists the following categories as being in need of inspection and testing:
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. This states that “Every employer shall ensure that work equipment is so constructed or adapted as to be suitable for the purpose for which it is used or provided.” (Regulation 4(1)). This includes all work equipment (fixed, portable or transportable) connected to a source of electrical energy.”
The test will establish the safety and suitability of your electrical appliances we will carry out a visual inspection of the appliance. For Class [1] equipment we will also inject test signals into the cable and appliance to ensure their integrity.
Upon completion you will receive a report that details the following as a minimum:
1) A report containing each appliance type, name, location and description
2) A full set of test results for each appliance tested
3) A full list of any failed items with an explanation of their failure
4) A visible pass or fail label on each appliance detailing the inspection date, next test due and the inspector’s signature.
